Supplies

Supplies you can get on Amazon for Shiba Inu & Shikoku Ken

Grooming Supplies:

*DO NOT use brushes with blades on them like the furminator or some rakes because they are not made for double coated dogs and can damage the guard hairs.

Chris Christensen Dematting Brush, this brush is great for tangled fur especially in thicker areas when dogs blow their coat.

Chris Christensen Greyhound Style Brush, Great for removing chunks of pilling fur

#1 All Systems Slicker Brush, Great for overall grooming and loose fur removal

Isle of Dogs No.33 Shampoo, an amazing shampoo for coarse double coated breeds that has an elegant scent that isn’t overpowering.

Spectrum One Coarse Coat – A secondary option that is great for double coated coarse hair breeds.

Spa Blueberry Facial Cleanser – (safe soap around the eyes)

On Walks:

Earth Rated Doggy Poop Baggys

Petmolico Dog Poop Bag Holder Can attach to your belt, leash, etc.

Hands-Free Dog Leash – Select between multiple dogs or one dog. Pretty neat it has phone and keys storage.

Regular Reflective Dog Leash – Especially if you walk in evenings consider a reflective lead.

Embark Dog Harness – MY ALL TIME FAVORITE DOG HARNESS. I use Ruffwear too but this is cheaper and great quality. Small for Shiba and Medium for Shikoku.

Rolled Leather Collar – this is great for holding ID tags for your dogs at all times without harming their coat. Thicker collars if worn all the time will leave a funny indent on a double coated dog that will take a long time to return to normal. They can be used for walks temporarily though. These rolled collars I would recommend for ID purposely only.

Dog Food & Supplements:

Diamond Naturals Dog Kibble – great price and great formula. But always make sure your dog doesn’t have allergies to particular ingredients.

Essences Ocean Freshwater – Higher end dog food, a little pricey but great ingredients. Please make sure your dog doesn’t have allergies to particular ingredients.

Pure Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil – this is great to add mixed into your dog kibble. Amazing for coat and heart and joint health.

Green Lip Muscle Joint Powder – highly recommended mixing this into your kibble with moisture for joint support every other day!

8 in 1 Multi Vitamin – vitamins that make it easy! I love this stuff but some dogs may be picky because of the smell. Stick it inside of a treat!

  • I also recommend finding raw goats milk or making home made bone broth to add into your kibble for moisture and nutrient boost.

At Home:

Dog Kennel/Crate – it is important to kennel train your dog incase of emergencies or when you are not able to supervise them.

Peepee Pads – well that’s self explanatory.

Recall Training Lead (50ft) – Shiba & Shikoku are VERY risky when it comes to recall so I highly recommend NEVER HAVING YOUR DOGS OFF LEASH IN A PLACE THEY CAN ESCAPE. However, accidents can happen so its totally worth while to work on recall training as best as you can for safety purposed.

Ducky Toy – Something that seems to be very popular with my dogs, despite the fact that they have 100 other toys made of the same material. But maybe its the duck design.

Useful & Interesting Books

Feeding Dogs by Dr. Conor Brady – I actually recently started up on this book and I am sucked into it. It is so informative, explanatory and I love that the author cites his claims. It makes it easy to understand the diet of a dog and how the anatomy works pertaining to specific breeds.

The Shiba by Irma Jansen-Melskens – Great book, and the only book I have found so far that goes into the very details of the Shiba Inu.

Japanese Dogs – A great overview of all the native Japanese breeds for those of you who may be enthusiasts.
